Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of social capital and health behavior on the self-rated health in later life. For the current study, the latent growth curve modeling was utilized to analyze older adults those who aged 65 and older in the Korean welfare panel data from 2006 to 2014. The results from the unconditional growth curve model showed that the self-rated health tended to be perceived better over time. The gap between the elderly in low-income household and their counterparts tended to remain over time. Among social capital factors, reciprocity, social participation, the quality of social relationship significantly predicted the self-rated health at baseline but did not predict its rate of change. On the other hand, social trust did not affect the self-rated health at baseline but significantly predicted its rate of change. Among health behavioral factors, only smoking and drinking significantly predicted the self-rated health at baseline. Based on the findings, we discussed the role of social capital in improving the self-rated health in later life.
